Development

Commerce

The Department of Commerce started functioning in 1967 with the Pre-Degree Course. In 1970, the department started the Under Graduate programme B.Com. with Cooperation and the Post Graduate programme Master of Commerce (M.Com.-Finance) in 1979. The department strives to attain the highest standards in teaching by maintaining a dynamic academic atmosphere.

The department is enriched by eight regular staff members who are dedicated to providing aspiring students with a wide range of professional and interpersonal skills in the fields of finance, accounting, business and research. The members of the faculty are actively involved in research and extension activities. Out of eight members, three of them are Ph.D holders. As part of excellence the faculty members regularly publish research papers in international and national journals.

Since 2017, the department has been offering various certificate courses, related to accounting, taxation, stock market trading, and government local administration for UG and PG students, in association with numerous reputed institutions like Hedge School of Applied Economics, Keltron, KILA, TIME etc. The department also encourages exposure in the corporate world through internship projects with reputed organizations. Students are encouraged to develop their leadership and entrepreneurship skills by two prominent clubs and forums functioning in the department, such as the Entrepreneurship Development Club and the Student Chapter of the Thrissur Management Association (TMA). The department conducts seminars, workshops, and lectures by experts in various fields on a regular basis to blend industry practices with academics.

Over the years we have numerous rank holders in university level for both UG and PG course. A recently added golden feather on our hat was the achievement of University 3rd rank for our MCom student Sri. Aiswarya A G (2021-23 batch). Student assessments are conducted on an ongoing basis through seminars, assignments, and internal examinations. Remedial classes and tutorials are also conducted to support students in their learning process. Regular PTA meetings are conducted to ensure the active participation and awareness of parents in their children’s academic journey. Personal counselling and guidance for students are also conducted after class hours.

The prominent alumni of the department include professors and professionals such as chartered accountants, cost and management accountants, company secretaries, bank employees, etc. Many of our previous students are also in the process of near completion of their professional courses.
